Renaming files

Helps a lot if trying to watch files in a certain order if the way it's displayed on your xbox, ps3 goes only by names, etc.

Since Playlater simply names the files the way they are on the link, they do not include the link added info IE the episode information such as S1E5 (Season 1 Episode 5) and no matter what you Rename the file to in the PlayLater subdirectory then the end user would be forced to keep a List of the episode names to be able to watch them in the correct order.

    Thank you.

    I guess that's a vote of support :P Thanks

And I guess you're welcome for suggesting it too XD

As a complement to this, can we get PlayLater to display the FULL filename? Currently it strips off the show name at the beginning, leaving only the episode title showing which makes it VERY dificult to tell which recordings belong to which show!

@ Kevin I haven't come across that...but if the file name is too long it'll probably mess up the way PlayLater shows up on screen and result in more bugs. Usually if you select the file it'll show in the details bubble the full name of the file and the description. Maybe you can elaborate on your problem you're having?

Sorry, after reading your question, I realize that I was not clear in my comment. The name is clipped when viewing the files in PlayOn via a DLNA client. It doesn't seem to matter which, they all display the same shortened name. As an example, here is what I see in the folder: "Once Upon A Time - s01e15 - Red-Handed.plv". However, this is all that is displayed on the client: "s01e15 - Red-Handed".

In PlayLater, the file name is displayed exactly as the client, but you can also see the show name displayed a couple of lines down for that entry, so you can still tell what show it belongs to. So, PlayLater "knows" what show it is, but just isn't displaying it to the client. I hope this clarifies.

Oh, I didn't know that...however, having such a long name might actually make it a mess for me if say they skip an episode in PlayLater and I have to go to the details bubble to find out more if it won't display the full name on screen (i.e. Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego: season 1 episode 1.flv) as is....So maybe a future option to change how the names are displayed?

I'm not in charge of making these decisions by the way, just a guy that's curious about the future of this product and the best way to improve it.

I am not happy with this software at all, however I am very pleased with Playon, that being said:

There is a serious need to allow the end user to edit the file-names in PlayLater so as to resolve the issue entirely, if they enabled that along with the ability to create subfolders for each series then at least the software would have a redeeming value in my opinion. I as a programmer understand what difficulties lie in the software creation and maintaining processes. On the side of PlayLater's authors they have to contend with content owners rights, and staying within the boundaries that keep them free from legal issues, and their desire to sell their product, IE the encrypting of the files. However there are things within the control of PlayLater programmers as in  the renaming of files and giving the ability for the enduser to create subfolders this is not that difficult to do, in reality rather simple, however Playon software engineers seem to be unwilling to take this matter into advisement.

It would be in the best interest of this company to make every effort to make PlayLater have a real tangible value to the enduser, as it stands in my opinion, currently this software is lacking in every form.

@William Smith I entirely agree with you on...every point (Think I got them all in there :P). However, if you'll notice by the features suggested list, 2 of them have a mark by them saying they've been planned. They include the auto-recording feature as well as (and you mentioned it several times) downloading to folders. Now, PlayOn itself wasn't that great to start with, it used to have many maaaaaany problems for awhile such as a lot more videos not playing or the queue not being deleted or channels just stopped working. I'm hoping the same is true with this product.

I have a feeling they wanted to get something that worked to the early testers and then improve upon it later. It might not end up with as much polish as PlayOn, but so far (at least for me), it's been a great product to have and to use.

In an effort to avoid creating a duplicate feature request, I'll simply state that a more robust naming convention would be handy.

This is related to the previous suggestion: Right now, at least on my server and based on what I've seen, recordings are dumped into one folder. Its a jumbled mess of recordings that's also difficult to navigate when playing back recorded shows/movies. (As I mentioned, I only recorded a handful of shows and when I checked the recordings in PlayOn via the PS3, it was just a list of shows.) I personally would like to see a folder-ed structure along the lines of

    • Show Name Season # Episode # - Episode Title = Psych S103-Speak Now or Forever hold Your Piece

    or

    • Show Name\Season #\Episode # - Episode Title = Psych\Season 1\03 - Speak Now or Forever hold Your Piece

And so on.  Obviously 'Season #' should only apply when/if it makes sense; Firefly for instance was a 1 season show so I don't think its necessary. As for 'Episode #' the double digit numbering scheme is fine (like 01 02 .. 64 etc) but for Epic shows like DragonBall or Naruto, triple digit numbering might be more appropriate (like 001 002 ... 134 etc). If not on the file system, maybe the PlayOn engine could 'clean it up' prior to display so to speak.

PlayLater and PlayOn can't look-up episode information for you or organize the recordings. However, you can edit the recordings to add this information or move them into folders to arrange them how you would like to see them. You can even add metadata so information shows up when browsing the files from a video player, through PlayOn or when browsing network shares.

    Chris,

When you say "You can even add metadata so information shows up when browsing the files from a video player" are you saying by changing the file name in windows explorer or by using Playlater?  If not via windows explorer, then can you point me to where we could change the metadata information.

    Thanks

@Aly, I'm not sure about this metadata stuff, but I remember changing the names of files manually before and after doing that they no longer appeared on the Playlater list when I tried to use PlayOn

You can only rename a file through Windows Explorer. Renaming a file will have no effect on whether or not the file appears inside PlayLater. However, the name will be changed. To change metadata information, you can edit the file's properties in Windows Explorer.

That certainly hasn't been the case for me with 3 files that I renamed and still aren't showing up with the newest version of PlayLater. Should I send in a support ticket?

Renaming the files in windows explorer works for my dnla devices. I have season folders with episodes from playlater and other sources as well. I have "my media" pointed at these folders and on my dnla devices they all show up in order. On the playlater gui however, they don't get renamed. Just as Chris said.

If you change the metadata for the file, the changes will be reflected through PlayLater and PlayOn. If you have trouble with a file, please submit a support request. The Feature Requests section isn't a suitable forum for troubleshooting. We can help you sort out a problem if you submit a ticket.

The name of this request is renaming files.  At the top it says done.  So how do you rename files with PlayLater?

You can rename the name of a recording just like any other file on your PC--open your storage folder, right-click the video file and select Rename.

Not exactly what I would want or what seems to be talked about in the forums.  I would be looking for the ability to rename files from within PlayLater.  As mentioned by others TV shows are often named with only the episode name or the season episode information (ie s01e04)  info without the actual name of the show or series.  If you try to record multiple shows just looking at them in the file explorer you have no idea what show they are from.  If you could rename from within PlayLater you could see what show it is from and more easily name it without jumping between two applications.

PlayLater cannot be used to manipulate files, so renaming files will not be possible. We have no plans to change this at this time. However, you can right-click a recording or blank space under the My Recordings tab inside PlayLater to open your storage folder without having to browse to it.

What about allowing the user to name files at the time of setting the record request?  Basically a "Save As" feature.

That could be possible for a future version of PlayLater, but not something we could implement right now.
