Play ISO files like DVDs through My Media

I have a bunch of ISO files from DVDs that I backed up on my computer.  I like to play them through the My Media functionality in PlayOn, but it doesn't have the full controls/functionality of the DVD. It would be great if when I played the ISO file, it ran just as if I were playing the DVD - complete with the menus, bonus features, and controls to navigate the "DVD"

The cinematube has that if you put it on a portable hard drive, but yeah, I'd love to see PlayOn have that. Might put a huge strain on your connection though...

    PlayOn Support (Chris)

The only way you would be able to do this is by using a device that natively supports iso files. We may one day add support for iso files to My Media, but it would only be for sending the file to the device. If your device doesn't support iso files already, you won't be able to open them.

    Hi Chris,

What about this idea instead? What if, on the PlayOn Server computer, you were running something like Daemon Tools to mount the ISO? The result of that is a unique drive letter (let's call it H:), that looks like a standard DVD when you browse it (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders with VOB files, and other related disc files in it). If you were to then add that drive letter as a shared media source within PlayOn's My Media settings, could PlayOn be made to serve up the "DVD"?

Would removing the handling of ISOs help you to add support sooner?

Do you think it'd be possible to get the disc menu over DLNA? The functional menu is generally called "VTS_01_0.IFO" and is playable via VLC. What I'm not sure about is if you can make selections over DLNA or not. If not, you'd be stuck with having to begin playback with VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB and progressing through the remaining VOBs in that series.

That would limit you to the default language and subtitles (usually set to none), but it would at least allow you to mount basic ISOs on the server side and serve them up via PlayOn. In theory, at least.

Sidebar: If you could find some way for PlayOn to interact with Daemon Tools to mount and unmount ISOs, much like the way it interacts with VLC to open, close and stream video files.... that'd be sweet. :)

Which apparently is very possible, and has been for many years now :) - Details: http://forum.daemon-tools.cc/f19/command-line-help-launch-iso-28552/
