Partial Recordings

So I put in a ticket for this problem after searching online and finding several people having the same issue in one form or another.

My issue I have is I am getting only partial recordings and I have no Idea where to start to correct the issue. I have searched the internet and found others having the same issue in one form or another but get no answer to the problem.

I am running windows 10, I have a high end gaming system that i built, and Comcast internet 150 down 15 up. nothing else running but the latest playon server.

Im not sure where to start, if someone can point me in a direction to try and fix the problem. I have put a ticket in to support but the system is confusing and I ended up with 2 tickets.

any help from the community on where to start would be a big help until support can get to one of the tickets.

thanks,

It is painful. I have had almost 5 great years with PO.

W10 here too. Only source that has been flawless is Hulu...if that's a clue.

It is better after the support team provided me a method to watch what the video that was actually recording by PO and for me to provide those observations to the support team.  Right now I am stuck managing Silverlight: PO 'uses' IE, and I am working through the uninstall of Silverlight with the reinstall under IE. Haven't had the time to complete ==> every time Silverlight is removed, it is reinstalled upon start up... either W10 or Edge has some auto updating that I haven't found, or something i have not guessed yet.

Do your Partials occur on all sources equally?

It was a hit or miss with all sources, mainly xfinity. Support responded back with they were able to reproduce the issue. So it was a bug

I am also having the same issue.  Just purchased PlayOn Plus, and my first recordings are only partial recordings.  The recordings include some random links to click on and change settings; however, the links don't work.

I am considering PO and decided to get a look at the user forum first. Is the product ready for "prime time" or do you find it's too rough around the edges?  I'll mostly be scheduling recordings of the ABC and CBS and pairing PO with Playstation Vue.

I use PlayOn almost every day (it is our only DVR), and sometimes partial recordings are an issue.  From my understanding, sometimes it is the fault of the internet connection, and sometimes it is the fault of the "channel" itself.  For the most part, it has worked very well for all of us.

ABC:  Unless you have a login, ABC does require you to wait a week to record.

CBS:  They post the next day.

I don't know if this is for you, but I've been working on better automating a lot of PlayOn's functions for a few years now --- one of the things I've been trying to do is increase the reliability of the recordings --- as mentioned, there's a few cases where you can automate around either retrying partial or waiting until an opportunistic time to retry a failed recording (the latter being like ABC as mentioned above). I've found a lot of partial recordings happen if you shut down the service or computer without knowing whether a recording is in progress as well. Depending on how many subscriptions you have and how much you record entire seasons at one go, this happens not too infrequently for me.

I have a number of powershell scripts that run at regular intervals that do things like move downloaded content to a consistent folder hierarchy, detection and handling of watched media, consistent renaming with TheTVDB, etc. One additional thing I added a while back was automatically retrying partial recordings. I'm also debating adding some smarts in there at some point that can tell when content might think it's completely downloaded but it's not --- more than a few times you hit an issue with the browser and either the recording abruptly stops or gives up because of some issue with the site or service, and that doesn't seem to always be picked up by PlayOn as "not done". But it works most of the time.

If you're interested in checking it out:

If you are looking for a pretty UI, then maybe this isn't for you, but if you're comfortable with scripts, then it'd be worth a look. It's fairly flexible, meaning that if there's specific functionality you don't like, it's not too hard to disable or modify it. In the case of failed recordings, I don't automatically re-record by default because usually it indicates a bug that needs to be addressed by a PlayOn update to work. But in very narrow circumstances, for example, Modern Family on ABC, the show is seen by a PlayOn recording for about 10 days and attempts to record automatically before the episode is available to download for free (without ABC credentials). So, there I do have a script that waits and automatically retries failed MF after that time period.

My Playon has started a relatively new problem for me. Recordings just keep going and never stop. If I stop them (and not delete the recording) I get a notification of Partial recording. I have removed and reinstalled and it also doesn't seem to matter what channel from which I am recording. Any ideas on how to resolve this or what causes it?

I have not had this as a regular issue (only happens once in a great while).  My suggestion would be to stop / start the server.  If that does not work, I would also restart your computer.  Last but not least, make sure the version you are running is the latest.

    Gregory,

I think you have hit on something that might be useful to alot of folks. I consider myself to be fairly technical but not familiar with scripts. Spent 3 hours today trying to make your solution work and finally gave up. There were just too many parts that I had to all get together. Would be willing to help make your solution more favorable to the general audience if there is anything I could do to help.

    Best regards,

    Lloyd
