record from dvd

I like the clean recordings. It would be nice to record from an actual DVD.

For that you should use Makemkv (http://www.makemkv.com/). It'll rip just about anything. It's been in beta forever, and you can get a beta code that is good for about 30 days in the Makemkv forum.

Be aware that breaking the encryption on DVDs is illegal in the United States (thanks to lobbyists from Hollywood studios presumably) and therefore is not a likely feature for PlayOn, in addition to being out of scope.

Otherwise making a copy for personal use is legal, so I've mostly used DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/), to rip the disc, and Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/), to convert the rip to MP4, to do that. Some newer DVDs require a tool that's still being maintained to be ripped though.

MakeMKV is an excellent available option to record DVD and BD content to a hard drive. The beta is updated regularly to accommodate newer forms of disc protection.

Some jurisdictions allow for backing up purchased content (not rented content), but not in the United States.
